ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) interconnects billions of diverse devices delivering remarkable services ranging from smart homes, industries, and finance to healthcare. However, the connected IoT devices are facing the problem of security due to decentralized storage and vulnerability of private data. Blockchain, integrated with IoT, can help in solving issues related to security by storing the data in an immutable and distributed manner. Blockchain is a tamper-proof distributed ledger that stores data in the form of transactions encrypted through cryptographic approaches. This chapter aims to outline a comprehensive and sweeping study of the current research endeavours in the area of blockchain-based IoT. We initially start with the issues in IoT, then present the fundamentals of blockchain and how it can be used to mitigate the risks associated with IoT devices. From there, we proceed to explain the real-life applications of blockchain-based IoT structures, followed by a review of the existing techniques for combining these two technologies in an efficient manner to provide a secure IoT.
